This bundle from Bungie and Microsoft features three previously released games from the Xbox’s cornerstone Halo series. Included are the original Halo: Combat Evolved, its sequel Halo 2, and the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack, an add-on originally released independently both through retail channels and the Xbox Live online gaming service.
Halo is a sci-fi shooter set in a huge, ring-like space station, which is under invasion by an aggressive alien race. Many missions are best accomplished through teamwork, and certain multiplayer capabilities are supported with this in mind. The 3D engine’s default view switches between first person and third person, depending on the situation. Much of the action takes place in the wide open spaces inside the mammoth space station, with no level breaks or load times as the player moves from one place to another.
The first-person shooting action continues in Halo 2, against a host of new alien races. Players once again assume the role of a genetically engineered soldier known as the Master Chief, as he battles the remaining forces of the Covenant for control of the galaxy. The Master Chief is now be able to acquire new weapons from fallen enemies and explore the planetary landscapes from inside more than twice the number of vehicles found in the original.
The Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack includes nine multiplayer maps, along with a documentary featuring interviews with the designers, suggested strategies, and video fly-throughs of the new areas. An animated short that expands on the plot of the single-player campaign is also included. The disc’s nine new maps are also available to Xbox Live subscribers for purchase and download online.
